Harry Kane proved that he still loves former club Tottenham by refusing to lift the Visit Malta Cup with his Bayern Munich team-mates on Saturday. With Kane coming off the bench, Bayern beat Spurs 3-2 to win the pre-season trophy in north London.

Kane's return to his former stomping ground came almost a year to the day since his £86million move to Bavaria, which called time on a goal-laden 19-year stint in Spurs' famous white shirt.

Dejan Kulusevski gave Tottenham the lead inside a minute, before a flurry of first-half goals from Dayot Upamecano, Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller rendered Kulusevski's second of the game meaningless.

Although trophies have been hard to come by in Kane's career, he flatly refused to lift the Visit Malta Cup against his old employers. The 31-year-old, who scored 280 goals to become Tottenham's all-time record scorer, shook his head at his fellow Bayern players and repeatedly told them 'no'.

Eric Dier has also ditched Tottenham for Bayern in the past 12 months and he, along with Kane, was presented with a commemorative pre-match award by club legend Ledley King.

For all of his individual achievements, Kane is yet to win a major trophy in his club or international career. The striker scored 36 goals in 32 Bundesliga games last season, but he still didn't get his hands on silverware as Bayern flopped in their domestic cups and ended an 11-year streak of German league titles.

Kane followed up that disappointment by helping England to the final of Euro 2024. However, just like they did three years ago at Euro 2020, the Three Lions fell agonisingly short.

Tottenham legend Kane will hope that the guidance of new Bayern manager and former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will help to kick-start his trophy cabinet. Their Bundesliga campaign gets underway against Wolfsburg on August 25.

Kane made his reasons clear to Spurs' adoring fans after deciding on a move to Germany last August, posting a video to Instagram in which he said: "I felt like this was the time to leave I didn’t want to go into the season with a lot of unresolved future talk.

"I wish Ange (Postecoglou) and all the boys the best, honestly, you know I’ll be watching as a fan and want them to be successful. It’s not a goodbye because you never know how things pan out in the future but it’s a thank you and I’ll see you soon."
