The Football Association have announced that Lee Carsley will take the helm as England's new manager on an interim basis.

Following Gareth Southgate's departure after last month's heart-wrenching Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, the current England Under-21 manager was widely expected to fill in temporarily.

The FA has now made it official, stating that Carsley will be in charge for the time-being.

FA CEO Mark Bullingham expressed his confidence in Carsley on Friday: "Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level.

"He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the UEFA Nations League games ahead. We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process."

Carsley himself said: "It's an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager.

"My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League."

At the age of 50, Carsley brings a wealth of coaching experience from his time at Coventry City, Sheffield United, Brentford, Manchester City and Birmingham City.

Carsley, who is held in high esteem by the FA and led England's under-21 team to their first European Championship victory since 1984 last year, will be at the helm for the upcoming matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland next month as England gear up for their new UEFA Nations League campaign.

Since Southgate confirmed that his final match in charge was the 2-1 defeat to Spain at Euro 2024 last month, a number of big names have been associated with the England job.

Mauricio Pochettino and Graham Potter, both currently without clubs, have been mentioned as potential successors, while Carsley is also thought to be in the running for the permanent position if he impresses.
