Jurgen Klopp won’t be waiting a full season to get back to work once he leaves Liverpool in the summer - not off the field anyway. The German boss confirmed last month that the 2023/24 campaign would be his last at Anfield, citing mental fatigue and a desire to take a break from football.

Instead, the 56-year-old will get his hands dirty, not to mention his overalls, on a major family-based project. Klopp is having two new properties built, one in his homeland in Wiesbaden - situated near Mainz where he started his managerial career.

But he’s also clearly planning for when he has more recreational time. Klopp is also having house constructed in Mallorca, having previously made no secret of the fact the Balearic Island is his favourite holiday location.

The home in Germany is reportedly being constructed so that Klopp and wife Ulla can be close to the family, having recently become grandparents for the first time. But it’s the project abroad that has left him taken aback. “The bloody thing’s not even ready yet and I’m paying the bills,” he joked.

In June 2022, Klopp paid a huge £3.4 million for the luxurious property, acquiring it from Swiss businessman and artist Rolf Knie. But given his commitments on Merseyside, thus far it’s been Ulla who has taken charge of organising proceedings.

Work is behind schedule, with Klopp reported to have told family and friends he wants “to get stuck in” and help speed up proceedings. Building plans include an irrigation system as well as multi-million pound state of the art garden.

Klopp took over at Liverpool in October 2015 and in more than eight years at the club, has overseen his side win every major trophy in domestic and European football. When announcing his shock decision, he admitted he was "running out of energy," and said he could not do the same job "again and again and again and again.”

But DIY is unlikely to be at the forefront of his mind between now and June. Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Burnley on Saturday took them back top of the Premier League, having previously been displaced by Manchester City earlier in the day.

And the Reds this month have both a League Cup final with Chelsea and FA Cup fifth-round tie with Southampton to negotiate. They are also favourites to win the Europa League, having sauntered through to the last-16.
