Former Utah State deputy athletic director Jerry Bovee says he has filed an official grievance against USU President Elizabeth Cantwell and Athletic Director Diana Sabau.
“With confidence and a desire to defend the truth, I have complied with Utah State University’s grievance process by filing a formal grievance,” Bovee said in a statement Saturday. “I recognize that varying accounts and allegations have surfaced regarding the activities that led to decisions that were made.
“Nonetheless, I believe the truth will prevail, and my proven legacy and reputation, founded in integrity and honesty, will be restored. I trust that the University will consider my grievance, and in good faith, they will do the right thing. At this time, I will not be speaking publicly on this matter to allow the University to focus on this process and find a fair resolution.”
Bovee’s move comes after his July 2 termination for violating university policies associated with the reporting of sexual assault and domestic violence cases, according to an independent investigation. The investigation, conducted by Kansas City-based law firm Husch Blackwell, also led to the firings of former Aggies head coach Blake Anderson and director of player personnel and community engagement Austin Albrecht.
Former executive associate athletic director Amy Crosbie was also terminated from the program on July 8 for an unknown reason. Bovee and Crosbie’s firings sparked over 110 former and current Utah State athletes to sign and address a letter to the Utah Board of Higher Education and Utah State Board of Trustees asking for an “independent investigation” on their behalf.
A committee will be formed and conduct a hearing on Bovee’s behalf. After the committee comes to a decision, it will send a written summary to Cantwell, who will either accept, deny or send back the decision for further review.
