Typhoon Gaemi nears Taiwan, intensifies: work, financial markets likely suspended for a second day tomorrow

Typhoon Gaemi intensified to the level of strong typhoon this morning, and is expected to make landfall late tonight, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration.

The CWA said that Gaemi intensified into a strong typhoon in the three hours up to 11:00 am. Typhoon Gaemi was located around 150 kilometers southeast of Yilan County moving west-northwest at 18 kilometers per hour. The storm has a surface pressure of 925 hPa, with a storm radius of 250 kilometers packing sustained winds of 184 kilometers per hour, with maximum gusts of 227 kilometers per hour.

The eye of the storm is expected to make landfall in the northern part of Hualien County or the southern part of Yilan County late this evening.

Work and classes likely suspended for a second day tomorrow

According to the Central Weather Administration, the wind and rain forecast for tomorrow, Thursday, July 25, will meet the standard for suspension of work and classes for 22 municipalities in Taiwan. However, it is up to respective local governments to officially declare suspension of work and classes.

According to the CWA forecast, tomorrow morning will see winds of Beaufort-Scale level 6-7 with gusts up to level 10 in Greater Taipei and Keelung City, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Tainan, and Chiayi. Yilan and Hualien counties are expected to see winds of level 8-9 with gusts up to level 11-12.

21 municipalities suspended work and classes for Wednesday, July 24. Announcements for Thursday are expected to be made at 8:00 pm this evening.
