Police on Tuesday appealed for witnesses after a vehicle fell into the sea from Shenzhen Bay Bridge on Monday night; killing the driver, a 46-year-old customs officer. The incident happened at 9.18 pm on the bridge's northbound section. In a statement, police said the car had reportedly lost control, rammed into an information road sign on the hard shoulder, then bounced over the barriers before plunging into the sea. "Police officers and firemen sped to the scene and conducted search and rescue operation in the vicinity. The car was located at the bottom of the sea. The driver was trapped inside the compartment and later rescued by firemen. Sustaining multiple injuries, the man was rushed to Tin Shui Wai Hospital in an unconscious state and was certified dead at 1.30 am today," the statement said. The officer had been heading to work at the time. At an earlier press briefing, chief inspector Chui Wing-luen said the road was dry and there was no road maintenance work at the scene.
