Police mentorship program to attract aspiring officers

Police have called on people who want to join the force to enrol in their mentorship programme. Senior inspector Jaffy Chan, overseeing recruitment, said the mentorship initiative would help candidates when applying to join the police. Chan said figures showed that one in five programme participants would successfully secure the position of Probationary Inspector. This success rate surpasses that of non-participants, where only one out of every 27 people succeeded. Chan explained that those who join the mentorship programme would gain hands-on experience and personal coaching from police officers. "The very intentions of the rolling out of the programme is to allow mentees to have a diverse experience in getting to know what the police does, and how it's like to be a police officer should they join in the future," he told RTHK. "So, for this programme, every mentee is assigned with a mentor who will give them personal experience and coaching and workshop for their preparations." This year, 228 people joined the police mentorship programme. Among them was 24-year-old Luce Lo, who took a two-month hiatus from her full-time job as a financial adviser for the mentorship. Lo said she was motivated to join the Police Force after the mentorship programme. "My determination is far more than before I have joined this internship, because through the daily interactions with the police inspectors or those colleagues, I see some qualities and also their professionalism being a police [officer]." Applications for next year's mentorship programme will open on September 9.
