Cheung one match away from retaining Olympic crown

Edgar Cheung is through to the final of the men's individual foil after beating his Japanese opponent in the semis. Cheung prevailed against Kazuki Iimura 15-11. Both fencers started the match with quick points, as they went neck to neck in a gripping semi-final match. Cheung was able to widen the gap and ultimately take the win with seconds still remaining in the first round. Coach Gregory Koenig said they are here for the gold once again. “He really could control his emotions. He showed real maturity in his fencing. Whatever the score was, he was really focused so it was amazing,” he said. “We still have one more match. We came here for the gold and we will give the maximum for the gold.” This will be the second fencing medal for Hong Kong, China, given Cheung is guaranteed at least a silver. It also means Cheung becomes the first Hong Kong athlete to have a chance at defending their Olympic title. If he wins, Cheung would be the first man to defend an Olympic foil title since 1956. He will face Italian Filippo Macchi in the final at 4.10am Hong Kong time.
