Observatory issues Standby Signal Number 1

The Observatory on Saturday issued the Standby Signal Number 1, as the tropical cyclone over the central part of the South China Sea remains rather loose. The tropical cyclone is now centred within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong and may affect us. Squally showers associated with it and the southwest monsoon are covering the central to southern parts of the South China Sea. According to the present forecast, the tropical cyclone will intensify and gradually take a more northwesterly track, moving in the general direction to the vicinity of Hainan Island. Under its influence, there will be occasional squally showers over the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days. Winds offshore and on high ground in the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary will pick up gradually later tomorrow. There will be swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline, not to engage in water sports and take note of the latest weather forecast.
