A Devonshire Escape

North Devon’s premier coastal escape The Watersmeet Hotel a stunning retreat at any time of the year but there is no doubt that in the summer months, it is even more special.

Located on a clifftop overlooking the rugged Atlantic coast, between the ancient village of Mortehoe and the lively seaside and surf spot that is Woolacombe, this Edwardian boutique property enjoys its own private access down to Combesgate Beach. This secluded sandy cove is perfect for bodyboarding and rock-pooling, and rarely gets crowded, even in the height of the season.

The summer months are also when Watersmeet’s spectacular al fresco spaces really come into their own. The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly its stunning two-level terrace where guests can take in one of the finest views in England whilst enjoying lunch in the sunshine or feasting on a candle-lit dinner in the two AA Rosette Rocks Restaurant. The latter recently welcomed new Head Chef, John Cairns, who previously headed up the kitchen at the Michelin starred Olive Room in Ilfracombe. His arrival has coincided with the launch of a new menu which, for the first time, combines bistro style and fine dining options, rather than separating the two.

Whether it’s local asparagus with crispy poached hen’s egg, pickled red onions & Devon blue cheese; fillet of local cod with saffron & shellfish sauce or Exmoor rump steak, the finest locally sourced ingredients are at the heart of John’s beautifully prepared dishes. Afternoon tea is a particularly popular ritual at Watersmeet; after all this is Devon! The terrace is a popular spot to savour this sumptuous spread while the more adventurous may prefer to enjoy it in the form of one of the hotel’s gorgeous picnic hampers, complete with blanket, for just £45 for two people.

When it comes to outside spaces, the hotel recently unveiled a fabulous multipurpose area on the lawn, the perfect space for everything from outdoor dining and impromptu dinner parties to smaller weddings. Watersmeet’s inaugural barbecue is now here as a regulars during the summer season.

The hotel’s outdoor pool is sure to be a popular fixture over the summer, with an indoor pool with hot spa and steam room also available for less clement days.

Step into its cool, contemporary and airy interior and Watersmeet is equally inviting, with its 28 individually decorated bedrooms and suites offering both comfort and luxury. Many have their own balconies or terraces from which guests can take in dramatic views of the beach and rolling surf, and beyond towards Hartland Point, Baggy Point and Lundy Island. Here guests will discover the very best pocket sprung beds, the finest quality linens, superior memory foam pillows and a Nespresso machine as standard.

The hotel offers a myriad of activities on its doorstep, including surfing, kayaking, coasteering, golfing, hiking and horse riding. Meanwhile younger members of the family, should they manage to tear themselves away from the beach below, will be captivated by local attractions such as Ilfracombe Aquarium and Watermouth Family Theme Park & Castle.
