This Morning: Alison and Dermot apologise for set blunder

This Morning presenters Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond were forced to issue an apology to ITV viewers.

Alison and Dermot welcomed viewers to the show as they played Rod Stewart's iconic hit Maggie May on his 80th birthday on the January 10th show.

The pair were seen dancing to the hit as they suddenly realised the set's pillar, which is supposed to flash different coloured lights, wasn't working.

As Dermot banged on the pillar, Alison called out: "It hasn't got any lights in it, what has happened to it? It's falling apart, what are you doing?

"No it's not working. Can we plug it in please?"

Dermot said: "Welcome back everyone. Marie requested this song, Rod Stewart's Maggie May for the old Friday jukebox because it reminds her of college. Sorry about the pillar Marie."

The pair then swiftly carried on with the show after realising none of the other pillars worked either, keeping the show upbeat on Rod's special day.

The singer issued an emotional statement to his fans on his milestone birthday, as he said: "May I take this opportunity on my 80th birthday to personally express my gratitude and thanks to all of my loyal and rowdy fans all over the world, for helping give me such a wonderful life

"In return I hope I've given some memorable songs and lively concerts and... I've not finished yet."

His wife Penny also rushed to share an emotional tribute to her husband after 17 years of marriage as she penned: "Happy birthday my darling. So blessed to be sharing this day together with all our kids. Building more memories to carry with us into the future and to be held close to our hearts forever, I love you."

Tributes came rushing in from Rod's famous friends as Davina McCall said: "Happy Birthday Rod ! Thank you for all the joy and dancing !!! Hope you all have the BEST day." Lisa Snowdon added: "Happy Birthday Rod."

Jools Holland agreed: "Many happy returns dear pal xxx."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV1.
