An iconic Disney teen movie is being rebooted into a TV series and has been ordered to pilot by streaming platform Disney+.

According to Variety, The Mindy Project's Alina Mankin will serve as a writer and executive producer while Primetime Emmy-award nominated Liz Phang will be the showrunner and also executive produce the Holes remake.

Walden Media, who produced the original 2003 film will also be producing the pilot, after reportedly attempting to get a series version created for some time.

The official logline for the project reads: "In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose."

The legendary film was based off of Louis Sachar's 1998 novel of the same name and after the success of the book, it was adapted into the film we all know and love today.

It starred Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, Patricia Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson and Eartha Kitt in the lead roles. At the time of release, the film became a box office success, garnering a healthy $71.4 million from a $17 million budget. As well as this, it also received positive reviews from critics who praised the sense of nostalgia and the faithfulness to the original book.

The film saw a young boy called Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) being sent to Camp Green Lake, but the new series will see a gender swap and it will follow a girl this time around.

Following the announcement, fans of the original film have flocked to Reddit to share their views on the reboot. One person expressed: "Actually a pretty good idea. The movie was fine but you always lose something cramming a book into 90 minutes."

Another Reddit user penned: "Now this is treasure worth digging for, hope they do justice to such an iconic story."

While a third added: "Oh wow, this film is my absolute favorite. I think one of the rarer occasions where the movie is better than the book. Hopefully, they do it justice."

However, not everybody was sold as somebody quipped: "The movie is damn near a perfect adaptation of this book. There is zero reason to do this."

Someone else argued: "Another very unnecessary reboot. The movie is a near perfect adaptation of the book."

Holes is available to stream on Disney+. The tv series version is yet to be given a release date
