Television presenter Sarah Abo pulled out of a live show at the last minute when she was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery. The Australian star, 39, was scheduled to co-host Channel 9's Carols by Candlelight on Tuesday before being left in agony by appendicitis.

The serious condition is a painful inflammation of the appendix and could result in death unless it is treated immediately.

Sarah's co-star, David Campbell, halted the programme to announce the news on air.

He said from the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne on Tuesday: "Breaking news tonight. My beautiful co-host Sarah Abo has been struck down by appendicitis.

"She's had an appendectomy in the last couple of days and she's under doctor's orders to take it easy. Apparently hosting a three-hour national TV show is not taking it easy."

Cambell then sent Abo his well-wishes, adding: "I’ve seen her do the Today show in her sleep, but this is too much. I just want to say, Sarah, get better. I miss you pal."

Hours later, Sarah shared an update from the hospital and assured fans that she was recovering well.

She wrote: "Hello from hospital! Which is not where I thought I'd be tonight...but my appendix had other ideas! And unfortunately surgery has kept me from being at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl sharing this magical evening with you all, alongside my friend, the magnificent David Campbell.

"Thankfully, all is good, and I've been very well cared for by an incredible team of doctors and nurses. And I'll be watching another incredible team - the one behind Carols by Candlelight - from my hospital bed tonight."

This isn't the only health setback Sarah has had this year. Last month, she revealed that she was diagnosed with a "devastating" condition live on air.

While hosting the Today show, Sarah revealed she was diagnosed with coeliac disease.

While discussing gluten-free meals, she said: "I was recently diagnosed as a coeliac. This is devastating; I love pasta and pizza; I love all bread. Now what?

"When I go to restaurants, I have to ask if they have gluten-free options. I can even make my own flourless chocolate cake."

The autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system attacks the small intestine after consuming gluten.

The condition has no cure and can only be managed with a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet.
