The Day of the Jackal: Official trailer

The Day of the Jackal is gearing up for a nail-biting finale as the noose tightens around the elusive assassin. The gripping drama has followed the deadly exploits of The Jackal (Eddie Redmayne), a notorious hitman who's been eliminating high-profile targets across Europe.

His lethal activities have piqued the interest of MI6, with agent Bianca (Lashana Lynch) developing an almost obsessive pursuit of the hitman.

In the last episode, the former military sniper revealed his 'true' profession to his wife Nuria, promising to retire after the Ulle Dag Charles assignment. The Jackal successfully eliminated a local mobster to protect himself and his family, drawing Bianca's attention.

Despite being ordered to step back from the case, Bianca will undoubtedly be intrigued when Ulle Day Charles is assassinated in Croatia. The final episode airs at 9pm on Sky Atlantic on Thursday (December 12) and is also available for streaming on NOW.

But what can viewers expect from the series climax, and is there another season on the horizon?

Does The Jackal get caught?

The Jackal skillfully evades UDC's security and makes a break for Spain. After a run-in with the police in a Croatian town, he breaks through their barricade and loses them in a heart-stopping chase.

Just when it seems The Jackal has escaped, he swerves to avoid a child on the road and crashes. A kind-hearted passerby frees the injured hitman, only for him to steal the Good Samaritan's van and make his getaway.

The Jackal encounters Liz and Trevor at a camping site and coerces them at gunpoint to drive him to the Montenegro border and later to other parts of Croatia.

Liz betrays the Jackal by stabbing him and in retaliation, he kills the couple and heads for the airport. After disposing of his arsenal, he returns home to find Nuria and their son gone.

He discovers that MI6 agents Bianca and Vincent have located him at his Spanish villa through their probe into a local gangster's killing. In a tragic turn of events, Vincent dies protecting Bianca from The Jackal's bullet, but not before Bianca can fire back.

In their final confrontation, Bianca implores The Jackal to surrender for the sake of his family, stating "it doesn't have to end this way". Coldly, The Jackal responds with "It does" and shoots her dead.

Left with Bianca's body in his villa, The Jackal embarks on a quest to find his family, only to be hit by a car. Surviving against the odds, he meets Zina in Budapest, who talks about her unsettled debt and hints at targeting financier Timothy Winthrop.

Despite wanting to reunite with his family, The Jackal is resolute about pursuing his career as a hitman.

What happens after Bianca's death?

Bianca was persuaded to return to duty by MI6 Deputy Chief of Staff Isabel Kirby, who revealed that Foreign Secretary Jeremy Whitelock was in cahoots with Winthrop. The suggestion was made for Bianca to eliminate the Jackal before she herself was "dealt with".

Venturing to Spain alongside Vincent, Bianca sought to locate and kill the Jackal, discovering his residence through liaising with the Spanish police.

Despite being fatally shot by the Jackal, Bianca had harboured suspicions of a conspiracy. Prior to her mission, she messaged Osita: "Isabel sent me to take out the Jackal. If I don't make it, you know what happened".

Osita emotionally deletes the text and carries on working, but struggles with the death of his colleague. We could see more fallout as a result of her death within MI6 and in Bianca's family in the second series and whether another agent will track down the Jackal.

Will there be a second series of The Day of the Jackal?

The Day of the Jackal will return for a second series following its global success. The show has already garnered two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Television Series - Drama and Best Actor for Redmayne.

The series has set records as the most successful Sky Original to date and the biggest launch on Sky in over two years, attracting an impressive three million viewers in its debut week.

The Day of the Jackal topped Peacock's Top 10 TV Shows list and ranked among the Top 5 streaming originals in the US during its opening weekend.
