Sweetpea: Official trailer
TV enthusiasts, brace yourselves for the return of this year's unexpected hit series that is set for an even more "twisted" season ahead.
Ella Purnell, a British star who is quickly sealing her status as a television icon, dazzles in the Sky and Starz drama, portraying Rhiannon Lewis, an underestimated young woman whose loss of control unveils her true potential, giving rise to an ominous alter ego.
The compelling drama Sweetpea, crafted and executive produced by the writer behind Pure, Kirstie Swain, has captivated audiences in both the UK and US, with fans eager for more. A second season has now been officially confirmed.
Sky and Starz have whetted appetites with a tantalising hint: "Rhiannon Lewis returns with a vengeance as her killer secret continues to spiral and she becomes more twisted than ever."
While we wait for an official release date, Purnell, who also headlines another highly successful new series slated for a second run, Fallout, took a moment on Instagram to appreciate her show's loyal followers, reports the Mirror.
In a heartfelt video message, Purnell expressed her gratitude: "I just wanted to say thank you guys so much for watching Sweetpea and for all your reactions and responses.
"It's been so amazing to hear how much you guys like the show and we really appreciate it.
"And I wanted to be the first person to tell you some very exciting news. Which is that... Sweetpea will be coming back for a second series! Very exciting. So, I can't wait for you guys to see what we've been cooking up. Stay tuned!"
Since its release in October, the series has garnered glowing reviews from audiences and critics alike, quickly being hailed as one of the standout new shows of 2024.
In November, Decider published an article with the headline: "I Didn't Expect Ella Purnell's Sweetpea To Be One Of the Best Shows Of 2024 ... But Here We Are."
They continued: "With drama, murder, and a surprising number of laughs for an otherwise dark and serious series, Sweetpea is one of the most underrated series of 2024. Act accordingly!"
Forbes concurred, praising Purnell's "terrific" performance and promising viewers "you'll find much to love in the enticingly twisted new series".
Radio Times also lauded Sweetpea as "devilishly good fun" in their four-star critique.
"In one of the most fun dark comedy thrillers in recent years," they added, "Sweetpea's Rhiannon Lewis becomes an addictive-to-watch anti-villain that takes us on a thrill ride through her twisted form of justice.
"Billed as a 'coming of rage' story, Sweetpea is one of those rare limited series that leave you desperate for more; a perfect autumn binge-watch, it's amplified by Isabel Waller-Bridge's killer soundtrack."
With a mere six captivating episodes in its debut season, there's no reason to miss out on the series that's been the talk of the town before its anticipated return.
Sweetpea is available on Sky and NOW in the UK and Starz in the US.
