Heretic: Hugh Grants stars in A24 trailer

Horror enthusiasts are being urged to head to their nearest cinema to experience a newly released film that 'messes with your mind'.

They also claim that the film, Heretic, proves Hollywood's 'disservice' to its star, Hugh Grant. His performance has already garnered high praise from viewers since landing on the big screen last week.

Now also showing in US cinemas, the film has sparked an influx of reviews and reactions online.

Penned by the writers of the original A Quiet Place, it features Grant in an uncharacteristic role as Mr Reed.

The cast also includes Sophie Thatcher as Sister Barnes, Chloe East as Sister Paxton, Topher Grace as Elder Kennedy and Elle Young as Prophet, reports the Mirror.

The plot centres around two missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who attempt to convert a Scottish man, but their mission becomes far more perilous than they had imagined, resulting in dire consequences for all involved in a lethal game of cat-and-mouse.

Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, it was launched in the UK in time for Halloween and made its debut across the Atlantic today (November 8).

At present, it holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising Grant's 'infectious fun playing against type' and one verified reviewer stating it 'messes with your mind'.

Film buffs on the site have not been shy with their opinions, with one user exclaiming: "Definitely kept you at the edge of your seat the entire movie. Never seen Hugh Grant in such a role and was pretty powerful acting by all."

Another shared: "Thought-provoking. Somewhere between Saw, Cube, and 10 Cloverfield Lane, wrapped in a 'crisis of faith' theme.

"Come for the psychological thriller, stay for the philosophical killer. Excellent performances/directing. Much like the titular antagonist, the film manages to hold a microscope up to religion while giving us challenging choices to make."

One particular fan highlighted A24's contribution to the film's success, declaring they 'knocked it out the park again', while another commenter lamented Hollywood's underuse of actor Hugh Grant.

Their comment read: "Based on this performance, he clearly should have been given more antagonist roles. He chews up dialogue like Denzel in Training Day and easily layers on tension and malice. Fantastic."

Heretic is showing in cinemas now.
