BBC Breakfast: Sarah shares Jilly Cooper confession

BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay issued a warning to his co-stars' family as he said Sarah Campbell’s "secret is out". During Monday’s episode of the BBC hit show, the presenting duo discussed the recent news that Dame Jilly Cooper's popular raunchy novel Rivals has been adapted into a series for Disney+ and it’s set to be released next month (October 18.).

The book was originally released in 1988 as part of the Rutshire Chronicles, a series of 11 romantic novels that are each set in the worlds of the upper-class and Rivals is the second book in this series

The writer, 87, who has sold over 12 million books and is one of the UK’s most prolific romance novelists, appeared on the show in a pre-recorded interview to speak about the new show.

Sarah took the opportunity to make a confession as she admitted that she hid the book from her mum when she was a teen.

She went on to say: “I don’t think there was a teenage girl in the late 80s who didn’t have a Jilly Cooper tucked under their arm or hidden in their school bag from their mum.”

Sarah then pointed out: “I hope my mum isn't watching.” Jon burst out laughing as he asked: “Did you have one?” Sarah admitted: “Of course I did.”

Following his co-stars confession, Jon warned: Mrs Campbell if you are watching, I hope you’re not watching. There we go Sarah’s secret is out.”

Elsewhere in the show, Jilly said that she had been re-reading her book ahead of the eight part Disney+ series, which stars Doctor Who’s David Tennant as Lord Tony Baddingham.

She also admitted that she is relieved that the most outlandish sensibilities and plotlines of Rivals have not been toned down.

"Lots and lots and lots of sex," Jilly explained. "The 80s really were the most fun time. Masses of sex, masses of drinking, masses of parties. The younger generation all wish they had been born then."

Viewers tuning in to watch the show can expect raunchy scene as the first episode will see pair of fully exposed male during a "mile-high" sex scene on Concorde.

Jilly revealed: "That was not in the book but It’s fun. It’s quite naughty too. There is a lot of sex. In one episode they have every member of the cast coupled and fornicating for the next 20 minutes and all of that."

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am
