BBC Breakfast: Sports reporter issues apology to Naga Munchetty

BBC Breakfast sports presenter Hugh Ferris issued an apology to Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt on Saturday after the hosts spoke with Olympic Gold medallists Emily Craig and Imogen Grant.

The apology came as Charlie discussed with Emily and Imogen that they would "forever be the reigning champions" of their Olympic event. The duo then joked that it could be a pub quiz question one day.

"It might be one we actually get right," Naga joked referring to the pub quiz question as Charlie turned to their co-star Hugh: "Were you paying attention over there? You get that one?"

"I am familiar with pub quizzes that I fail at but I will make sure to get Imogen and Emily into a question," Hugh replied.

As Naga and Charlie thanked their guests, Naga said to Hugh: "Oh yeah you, there you are."

"14 gold medals a lot of which we will be talking about today," Hugh went on as he turned his attention to the latest sports news.

"Can you top that?" Naga interrupted as he replied: "Yes, I can top that with one goal, the opening match of the Premier League season. How about that if it is about numbers?"

Naga jokingly shut her co-star down by saying: "You don't win today."

"I have failed Hugh continued before adding. "I apologise to both of you and to Imogen and Emily as well."

He then promptly moved on with the rest of the sports news headlines for the weekend.

Earlier in the programme, Naga was forced to interrupt Charlie when speaking about a rather distressing story.

“This is a story from Florida, and apparently it’s reminiscent of a scene from the movie, The Meg, involving a Yorkshire Terrier,” Charlie explained when referring to the film that follows a a group of people attacked by a shark.

”What happened was, Maddie, a nine-year-old Yorkshire terrier, was swimming off her owner’s boat, and Maddie disappeared and dropped below the surface.”

Not wanting to hear anymore, Naga put her hand up and said: "Wait a minute," before asking: "Is this going to be a bad story?”

Charlie appeared to ignore Naga as he continued with the rest of the story which had a happy outcome as the dog had survived.

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
