Oscar-winning actress Allison Janney will guest star in Netflix's second season of The Diplomat.

Recognised for her classy turn as real-life figure skater LaVona Golden in I, Tonya, plus roles in the sitcom Mom, The West Wing, last year's AI epic The Creator and Curb Your Enthusiasm, Janney is onboard the political thriller as vice president Grace Penn, while its return premiere date has been confirmed as Thursday, October 31.

Ahead of the brand-new episodes, The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn teased:"Everything we thought we knew about the Wylers changes, as does everything they think they know about each other."

Speaking to TUDUM, the showrunner went on to recount how the debut season "ended with Kate's (Keri Russell) realisation that the attack on a British warship [that] brought her to the UK wasn't the work of a hostile nation - it was the British prime minister. Now she has to prove it."

"The US and the UK don't spy on each other. In fact, they share all their intelligence. So how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?"

The Diplomat, which also features Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power actor Rory Kinnear, Scoop's Rufus Sewell, Carnival Row's David Gyasi, Billions star Ali Ahn, Better Call Saul's Michael McKean and The Thursday Murder Club's Celia Imrie in its cast, debuted on the streaming service last year.

It follows Kate Wyler, the new US ambassador to the UK as she "helps to defuse an international crisis, forges strategic alliances and adjusts to her new place in the spotlight. She also manages her deteriorating marriage to fellow career diplomat Hal Wyler".
