Casualty: Dylan bids an emotional farewell to his dog

Casualty aired heartbreaking scenes tonight where Dylan Keogh (played by William Beck) said goodbye to his beloved dog Dervla and fans confessed they were "a mess" watching it. Dervla had been diagnosed with cancer and in the latest instalment of the long-running BBC medical drama, Dylan was given the devastating news that the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep.

While he was in tears on screen as he stayed with his faithful companion in her final moments, fans were also weeping watching the emotional scenes. They took to X to share their upset.

@AngieH1980 cried: "Oh #casualty you broke me. I’m a sobbing snottery mess. Between Dervla and Cam it was a heartbreaking episode."

@nickjon3006 was similarly distraught, writing: "Yeah #Casualty I’m a right mess. Those scenes with Dylan/Dervla broke me. Brought back some painful memories. This is definitely an episode I can’t watch again."

@anna_louise_xo praised actor William for his performance in the scenes, commenting: "Why William Beck has never won an award in all of his years on #Casualty, I will never understand. Don't watch tonight's episodes without tissues. I'm a mess. Absolutely beautiful acting from him as usual."

@hulme_steph issued a warning for those yet to see it, writing: "Tonight's Casualty has the saddest death of all, be warned #Casualty."

Meanwhile @griannedoherty took umbrage at the way Dylan's colleague Sophia Peters (Kellie Shirley) treated him during his difficult time. "Once again what kinda psych Nurse is Sophia meant to be exactly? She has absolutely zero understanding/compassion, at least when it comes to Dylan. Does she know he's autistic? So losing his beloved Dervla is gonna affect him more than most sadly #Casualty."

Dylan initally struggled to accept the vet's recommendation citing his own experience as a doctor fighting for his patients.

However, he eventually relented and gave permission for the procedure, rushing from his shift in Holby ED to hold his "best friend" as she slipped away.

The vet explained they had given her something to keep her calm prior to the medication to put her to sleep. "She'll slip away quickly and won't be uncomfortable," they assured him.

A tearful Dylan said his final goodbyes telling Dervla through tears: "You've been the best friend I ever had." He then stroked her gently, reassuring her it was OK as the medication took effect.

Following her death he was then shown sadly walking back to his car carrying her lead. He encountered nurse Sophia Peters in the car park who hugged him and told him it was OK.

Casualty is on BBC One on Saturday nights with previous episodes available on BBC iPlayer.
