Midsomer Murders returns to TV

The popular ITV series Midsomer Murders made a triumphant return to television screens, following a three-month break.

The second episode of the 23rd series had been delayed due to Euro 2024, but fans were thrilled to see DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon) and DS Jamie Winter (Nick Hendrix) back in action, investigating the mysterious death of a retired police officer at Challis Court, a gated community for ex-police officers.

However, some observant viewers noted a significant time lapse between seasons 22 and 23, particularly in relation to the growth of Barnaby's daughter Betty (Isabel Shaw). One fan commented: "If ever I needed proof that there's always such a gap between episodes of #MidsomerMurders, it's seeing how Barnaby's daughter has gone from literal toddler to schoolgirl in a matter of no episodes at all."

Others echoed this sentiment, with one stating: "Betty has grown up so fast," and another adding: "Betty must be the fastest-growing child in human history."

A fourth quipped: "I get the feeling a lot of time has passed (narratively) since the last #MidsomerMurders. 5-10 years, in fact. Everyone looks much older including Betty!"

The episode wasn't just a topic for discussion over apparent aging; fans expressed their dissatisfaction with what they slammed as a "boring" installment, yearning for the show to return to the glory of its "early days".

One irate viewer exclaimed: "This isn't doing it for me. I prefer the early, funny ones. But the tweets are great! #MidsomerMurders."

Another chimed in with criticism: "Terrible acting. Terrible casting. Terrible script. Just terrible. #MidsomerMurders," whilst an additional comment read: "It's always the most famous actor on #MidsomerMurders that did it! Fail-safe conclusion every time."

However, not everyone was discontent; numerous loyal fans were delighted at the series' return, with one especially pleased fan remarking:"New Midsomer Murders, just what the doctor ordered #MidsomerMurders."

Despite some positive reviews, the tide of negative feedback doesn't spell good news, especially amidst speculation that the show could be reaching its curtain call.

Betting agency betideas.com places the odds of the series winding up at a stark 8/11, leading spokesperson Lee Astley to comment: "The new series of Midsomer Murders was met with a mixed reception and with no confirmed date for its second reproduction, concerns are rising that ITV might be contemplating drawing the final curtain on the long-standing drama."

"Series 23, whenever it does resume, could well be the last one to hit our screens, with the show now just 8/11 to be canned after the latest season is aired."

"Meanwhile, ITV bosses could look to keep hold of the show but instead give it a major revamp to appeal to new viewers, including a new cast, with Midsomer Murders 6/4 to receive a significant rebrand."

Midsomer Murders returned to ITV screens at 8:30pm on Tuesday 16 July.
