The Yorkshire Vet: Peter 'embarrassed' by faulty equipment

It looked as though farmer Peter Wright was left red-faced on Tuesday evening after suffering an equipment malfunction. In the most recent instalment of Yorkshire Vet, Channel 5 viewers saw Peter take a visit to the Greens' farm.

While there, the experienced vet was tasked with disbudding Jean and Steve Green’s calves. This is a process which involves burning and destroying the horn-producing tissue around the horn bud before a calf reaches a certain age.

Speaking about the process, the Channel 5 star said: “It’s a job that’s better done now.” However, when he was there it was clear something was wrong with his disbudder.

At first, he had tightened the machine up too tight and was unable to get the gas out of the canister. Although the issues didn't stop there as he discovered a hole in the tube, letting gas out.

He said: “If I set fire, the whole building could go. I’m going to have to abandon the job, I’m going to have to get this sorted out.

“In 40-odd years, it’s something that’s never happened to me before, never!”

Although the farmers were disheartened they’d have to wait, Steve understood as he told the cameras that it wasn’t safe to continue.

Apologising for the mishap, Peter added: “It’s my fault, I’ve turned up with faulty equipment!”

When outside of the barn, it seemed that the mistake took a toll on the vet as he couldn’t believe turning up without the equipment intact.

He added: “I’m very embarrassed to turn up to Mrs Green when my equipment isn’t up to scratch.”

Later on in the show, the vet was seen fixing the machine to be able to go back to the Green’s farm.

Although he joked to get the car ready for a quick getaway in case it didn’t work, he let out a sigh of relief as he was able to get it alight.

However, whilst disbudding the calf, Peter faced another mishap while at work as the blazing machine was a bit too close to his clothes.

With the calf between his legs, Peter confessed to Jean and Steve he’d burnt a hole right through his overalls.

After the farmers made sure he was all ok, they couldn’t help but laugh at the blunder, especially considering his earlier mistakes with the machine.

In the end, he managed to get the job done with Jean and Steve happy with his work.

The Yorkshire Vet is available to watch Tuesday’s on Channel 5 from 8pm.
