LW: Christine Lampard announces Helen Worth's Corrie exit

At the start of June, Coronation Street star Helen Worth revealed she was stepping down from her role as Gail Platt after 50 years. First making her debut in the ITV soap back in 1974, viewers have seen the character involved in some of the most dramatic plots on the cobbles.

However, the 73-year-old has confessed it’s now the “perfect time” to bow out after a successful five decades. Since the news of her exit, fans have been speculating how the iconic character will make her exit.

Although some feared she’d fall victim to evil Joel Deering (played by Calum Lill), who was responsible for beating missing teen Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), it seems as though her exit could take a very different turn.

A source told The Sun that Coronation Street bosses want Gail to have a happy ending, which could see the comeback of the iconic character Martin Platt, played by Sean Wilson.

They told the publication: “A number of options were considered for Gail’s departure from the cobbles but bosses knew the moment needed to truly celebrate one of Corrie’s most iconic characters as well as honour Helen’s astonishing run on the soap.”

As the source explained that it didn’t feel right to kill Helen’s character off, after the many tragedies that has happened in her character’s life, bringing her love back seemed fitting.

They continued: “Martin was always considered the one that got away and bosses are thrilled they’ve been able to tempt Sean back to wave Gail goodbye.

“The plotline has many nuances, twists and turns but script writers all want this to feel like a gorgeous end of Gail’s story, with her finally finding her happy ending."

Express.co.uk has contacted ITV for comment.

The last time viewers saw Martin in Weatherfield was back in 2018 when he made a brief appearance following his exit in 2005.

Sean has since taken a step back from acting, however, he told Express.co.uk that although there were no plans of making a comeback to the cobbles, if the opportunity arose he might consider it.

He said: "I made it clear back in 2018 that it wouldn't be possible for me to move forward with any kind of editorial improvement in my situation.

"You know what? The character was well-loved even when he went back in 2018. It's up to the powers that be."

Coronation Street have confirmed that Helen will begin filming her exit storyline in July.

Although viewers won’t see her officially leave until the end of the year.

Speaking about her decision, the actress said: “I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in, week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.

“The past 50 years have flown by and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV from 8pm.
