BBC viewers will be pleased to know that Springwatch will be returning for its 20th series and they won't have to wait long as the new live episodes are just weeks away. The iconic series first began back in 2005 and gives viewers a look at British wildlife as the seasons change in the United Kingdom.

The new Chris Packham series will last for three weeks and will begin airing on BBC Two in two weeks, on Monday 27 May. The instalments will air on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8pm, with a special edition airing at 7:30pm on Fridays.

Much-loved presenters Chris, Michaela Strachan and Iola Williams are all returning to host the series. The programmes are broadcast live from different locations across the country, with previous episodes filming in North Wales, Devon and Dorset.

The show requires a crew of 100 people and over 50 cameras, making it the BBC's biggest British broadcast in an outdoor setting. A large number of the cameras are concealed in order to record the natural behaviour and characteristics of wildlife.

The popularity of Springwatch has meant the broadcaster was able to create the spin-off series Autumnwatch and Winterwatch. Autumnwatch was initially created as a spin-off but went on to become a fully-fledged series, airing from 2006 to 2002.

However, the BBC decided to cancel Autumnwatch amid budget constraints as they opted to focus their full concentration on Springwatch.

A statement from the BBC at the time read: "These are challenging times financially and we need to make difficult decisions and focus our resources on content that has the highest impact.

"Sadly, this means that Autumnwatch will not be continuing. Instead, we are investing more money into Springwatch and Winterwatch as they are most popular with audiences."

Winterwatch aired it's first episode back in 2012 and it's 12th series aired earlier this year on BBC Two.

Presenter Chris, 63, previously revealed whether his daughter Megan would appear on the next series, having co-hosted the show back in 2020.

He told Express.co.uk: "With Megs, it's difficult. We've got our full team and the thing about the Watches is that it's got to be about the animals, it's actually not about us.

"Michaela, Iolo, Megan and I, we aren't the stars, the animals are the stars so we want to cut down as much as possible on us and give the forefront to those creatures."

Springwatch airs on BBC Two at 8pm on Monday 27 May.
