Antiques Roadshow guests make appeal to find missing portrait

An guest said she would never sell her beloved paintings after expert Lawrence Hendra issued a warning about the items brought in by her and her sister. The guests also explained that while they had two of the paintings - one was still missing and they hoped to find it one day.

"So here we have two portraits of you both when you were younger, but I hear there's a missing third one. So what's the story here?" Lawrence began by asking his guests.

"Three of us were painted, but my late sister was painted first in 1959. It was exhibited in London. The artist is Cecile Crombeke, who was our art teacher at the school we were attending," the guest replied.

As he held out a ticket for an art exhibition, the expert replied: "Cecile Crombeke who was Bristol-born artist, she exhibited all around the country, so she is a known recorded artist, then it was shown in this exhibition."

The guest went on to explain that her sister's portrait got sold and so they have never seen it, she said: "That's correct and then my parents didn't realise they would have the opportunity to buy them, and it was sold and then we've never ever seen it.

"Unfortunately, she died in 2005, but she's got grandchildren and we would just love to get it to show her children and her grandchildren."

As the guest pointed to a photograph of her sister as a child, she added: "And that's my sister at the time the portrait was painted."

Turning his attention to the value of the two paintings, Lawrence shared: "If they were to ever be sold, I suppose they're worth £200, £300, £400 each."

Making it clear the paintings weren't going anywhere, the guest responded: "They're obviously staying in the family."

"Definitely," her sister chimed in.

The expert concluded: "So really, I suppose this is a call to arms. We want anyone watching this at home to run around the house looking on their walls, trying to find the missing portrait of your sister so we can reunite them."

"That would be brilliant, thank you," the guest added.

Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
