Bargain Hunt's Christina Trevanion was moved to tears during a recent episode as she delved into her family history, specifically the military past of her "hero" grandfather, Gerald Arthur Stacey.

The 42-year-old presenter visited a militaria expert in Leominster, Herefordshire, bringing along her great-grandfather's war medals to learn more about their significance and value.

Overwhelmed by emotion, Christina said: "I've brought along my great-grandfather's medals. He's a bit of a family hero, Gerald Arthur Stacey, bless him.

"He was my granny's father. And I was hoping that you might be able to tell me a bit more about them."

Expert Steve Nuwar revealed that Gerald wasn't just a "family hero", but a "significant" soldier who served under the Second Battalion London Regiment of the Royal Fusiliers, reaching the rank of Major and acting as second in command of the battalion.

He was honoured with a Distinguished Service Order medal, bestowed by King George V, and the Legion D'Honneur, France's highest distinction.

"To have both of these and the fact you've kept them in the family is fantastic," he remarked.

Christina responded: "They were very, very loved by my granny which is why his death penny is worn away."

However, it emerged that her great-grandfather never actually received his World War One medals while he was alive, as per records.

Christina appeared heartbroken upon learning that he had been injured in July 1915 and was entitled to the 14/15 star.

He was also due the MiD oakleaf and was recognised as a thrice-decorated soldier. Tragically, he was killed in action in 1916.

"I always remembered talking to granny about it because when he was killed in 1916, he left a very loving wife and four children," she recounted, becoming emotional.

Christina added: "Oh, I'm going to cry. I can't cry! Pull yourself together."

The historian also uncovered that her grandmother was Gerald's daughter Molly, who reached the grand age of 109, placing her among the top 25 longest-lived individuals in the UK.

Bargain Hunt episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
