Lorraine Kelly has hit out at trolls and conspiracy theorists who speculated about Princess Kate's health after she announced on Friday that she has cancer. The 42-year-old shared the news following weeks of concerns about her health and whereabouts after undergoing abdominal surgery in January.

Addressing the video on her show in a conversation with The Mirror's Royal Editor Russell Myers and Doctor Hilary Jones, Lorraine, 64, began by saying it "was a shame" that Kate had to share her personal health news, but believes she delivered it in a "pitch perfect" way.

In the video, the mother-of-three was seen sitting on a bench in relaxed attire as she spoke of finding out the news and telling the couple's children. She went on to tell those who are also suffering from cancer that "you are not alone".

Russell shared of the clip: "When you look at what's happened over the last few weeks, the conspiracy theories, they've raged out control, they've been outlandish, they've been hurtful, unfortunately the Palace didn't get ahead of it, or they couldn't on time."

"They're still out there," Lorraine chimed in. "The nutters are still being nutters. You think oh for goodness sake, just shut up!" Russell added: "They get that they're public figures, they get there is an interest in their lives, I think they were totally unaware of the outcry on social media scrambling for information.

"But, by doing this she has not only made a public statement but has laid herself bare talking about her private medical history."

Following reports that a staff member from the hospital she was treated at potentially tried to access her medical records, he added: "That may have been in the background, but it was all about the children."

Echoing her thoughts on the negative comments towards Kate, Lorraine urged the trolls to "behave".

Elsewhere on her show today, the presenter was taken aback after her set was gatecrashed by Susanna Reid for a special reason.

As Tyler West distracted Lorraine in the studio, Good Morning Britain host Susanna told viewers backstage that she was about to present her ITV co-star with a TV Bafta Special Award live on air.

Stunned at learning the news, Lorraine exclaimed: "This is nuts! Where’s Ant and Dec? This is a prank."

After finally realising it wasn't a wind up, the emotional presenter added: "This lovely. I'm absolutely thrilled to bits. Goodness me."

The prestigious award was given to Lorraine to mark her four decade long career, which began on TV AM in 1984.

Moments from her lengthy career in front of the cameras were then played out as she revealed it all began when someone "took a chance" on her after being told she'd never be a presenter due to her strong Scottish accent.

Lorraine is also nominated in the Daytime category at this year's Baftas ceremony, alongside Loose Women.

The Bafta Television Awards ceremony will take place on May 14 at London's Royal Festival Hall.

Lorraine Kelly airs weekdays from 9am on ITV and ITVX.
