Rhod Gilbert emotional following Celebrity Bake Off
Rhod Gilbert, who recently recovered from cancer, has made an emotional return to TV on The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer. During Sunday’s episode, the comedian described his participation as "quite emotional" and said he felt "lucky to be here".
Rhod, 55, was competing against soap star Danny Dyer, comedian Leigh Francis, and presenter Yinka Bokinni in the famous Bake Off tent, trying to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
In 2022, Rhod was diagnosed with a rare form of head and neck cancer and underwent treatment.
He has since been given the all-clear, which he described as a "relief". Speaking about his time on Bake Off, Rhod said: "For me, it is quite emotional just to be here because the fact is I am lucky to be here at all. I realised when I got cancer that I had been plodding along through my life thinking 'other people get cancer'."
Rhod added: "One in two of us is going to get some form of cancer in our lifetimes, that is pretty shocking and frightening. Things like this raise money for the research that goes into that treatment and I am living proof I guess, I am literally living proof."
The Welsh star’s appearance touched fans and many took to Twitter/X to share their delight at having him back on screens.
One wrote: “Jeez I’ve gone again. Love Rhod Gilbert so much. His story was heartbreaking too. What an episode. Brutal and hilarious.”
Another said: “Big fan of Rhod – we're all right behind you, every step of the way. Shining the light of a million candles in the darkness.”
While a third echoed: “You are a strong inspiration Rhod well done tonight.”

In February, Rhod opened up about his battle with cancer on World's Most Dangerous Roads. He didn't hold back in describing the disease as "savage" and shared how it completely took over his life.
He shared: "I'm not going to beat around the bush, it is savage. At times you think all we've got, me and my wife, it's just us and this cancer. My social life was gone, my work life has gone, I've got nothing except lying here being ill. I'm just ill. There is nothing else to my life."
