Janey Godley discusses going on tour with cancer diagnosis

Janey Godley has shared a career update amid her ovarian cancer diagnosis. The comedian appeared on ITV's Lorraine on Tuesday (March 5) to discuss how she's been coping with her tragic condition and if she intends to quit the stand-up comedy circuit.

In a sit down with host Lorraine Kelly, the Scottish star admitted when she went on her Not Dead Yet tour last year, she wasn't sure she'd be able to finish it. However, thanks to the encouragement of her comedian pal Jimmy Carr she decided to embark on the gigs anyway.

She explained: "The year before I started the tour I got told the cancer had come back and I decided to cancel the tour. [But] my mate Jimmy Carr said, 'Is your mouth not working?'"

"'Yeah my mouth works'," she shot back, to which he replied: "'Get back on tour!' And I thought. 'Yeah, he's right. What am I gonna do? Sit in the house and draw wee cats?'

"So I decided to go back on tour and it went great and I've just finished another tour over England and now I'm going to go on tour for March 16."

Elsewhere in the chat, Janey, 63, admitted she has paid off her car and put her financial situation in order so she doesn't leave any debts or burdens for her family to deal with when she dies.

The Glasgow native, who shares her only child - daughter Ashley Storrie - with her husband of 44 years, Sean Storrie, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November 2021 after suffering from stomach pain, frequent urination, bloating and a sore back.

She was later told she had stage three ovarian cancer following a hysterectomy. At the time, she wrote on social media that her diagnosis had shocked her and her loved ones.

Janey explained: “It's been quite a shock. It's been quite a shock to all of us. My husband and Ashley (her daughter) are back at home and they are just processing all this information too.

“There are people watching this who live for years with treatable cancers and that's what I'm hoping to do as well.

“I'd like to say I'm brave and I'm strong but I'm really, really vulnerable and frightened as well because that's what this kind of news does to people, but I'm also optimistic. I'm going to get chemotherapy, and then whatever treatment comes after this.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
