BBC Radio 6 Music announces new daytime schedule with Nick Grimshaw and Lauren Laverne

BBC Radio 6 Music has announced its new daytime schedule, which is set to be implemented later this year.

This morning (January 9), Lauren Laverne took to BBC Radio 6 Music to announce that she would be stepping down from hosting the Breakfast Show, which airs weekdays between 7:30am and 10:30am. She had been in the role for six years, and will be replaced by presenter Nick Grimshaw.

In the announcement, Laverne also confirmed that, while she will no longer be hosting the Breakfast Show, she will be returning to the station mid-mornings to present a new weekday programme. This new slot will see her carry over her much-loved regular features, including People s Playlist and Desert Island Disco. Live sessions will also be featured in the new slot.

Laverne s new mid-morning show and Grimshaw s hosting of the Breakfast Show will both commence in February. Nemone will present the Breakfast Show in the interim, beginning next Monday (January 13).

Speaking on the show this morning, Laverne recalled the battles she faced last year. In August, the popular music broadcaster, 46, revealed that she had received a cancer diagnosis, which doctors had caught early and unexpectedly during a screening test . She added at the time that she expected to make a full recovery .

In November, she shared the news that she had been given the all-clear and would be returning to work on the BBC One programme The One Show.

As listeners will know, I had a really tough 2024 and worried at times that I wouldn t be able to return to the station I love so much, Laverne said to listeners today. It has been a huge honour (and so much fun) to host the Breakfast Show for six wonderful years, but it is time to pass the baton on, and to set my alarm a little later.

During my recovery I learned all over again about the power of music, the people you surround yourself with and the emotional support and joy radio can provide. I m so grateful to be able to get back to doing what I love and sharing those things with our brilliant listeners every day, she added.

In a press release, Samantha Moy, Head of BBC Radio 6 Music, added: It really is wonderful news that Lauren is feeling better and is ready to return to 6 Music. Like our listeners, we have missed her enormously and we can t wait to have her back on air.

Nick Grimshaw also spoke about his new official role hosting the Breakfast Show and recalled what it was like to be offered the position after standing in for Laverne over the past few months.

I ve had the greatest four months covering for Lauren and I can t wait to continue waking you up on 6 Music. I want to say thank you to the listeners who ve made me feel so welcome over the past few months and to Lauren s fantastic team who have been imperative in making me so happy on air, he said.

6 Music is a precious place, a station I love, I m honestly honoured to be asked to work there and can t wait to continue supplying the best new music from the world s most interesting artists.”

Moy also discussed his impact, describing him as one of the finest broadcasters of his generation and saying that listeners have taken him into their homes and hearts .

As for how 2025 looks for BBC Radio 6 Music, it has also been confirmed that Mary Anne Hobbs will be taking a sabbatical and set to return in the spring with a new show. Her current daytime show will end in February.

My agenda has been to change daytime radio at 6 Music. It was David Bowie who taught me that creative life is progression. Once the work is complete… stand at the edge of everything you know and ask a different question, Hobbs explained, not divulging details about what the new show will entail.

As of last year, 6 Music was confirmed as the UK s biggest digital-only radio station, with a reach of 2.7million listeners.

Lauren Laverne rose to fame in the 90s as the lead singer and guitarist of pop punk four-piece Kenickie, whose 1997 album ˜At The Club went to Number Nine in the UK Albums Chart.

Over the past two decades, she has been a high-profile arts and music broadcaster on the BBC, hosting their coverage of Glastonbury Festival and BBC Two s The Culture Show. She joined 6 Music in 2008, and began hosting the station s Breakfast Show in 2019.

Grimshaw began his radio career at BBC Radio 1 in 2007, hosting various shows and serving as presenter of the Breakfast Show between 2012 and 2018. Nick left Radio 1 in 2021. He also co-presents two successful podcasts, Dish with Angela Hartnett and BBC Sounds Sidetracked with Annie Macmanus.
