Atlanta City declares inaugural Rich Homie Quan Memorial Day

The city of Atlanta has announced the inaugural Rich Homie Quan Memorial Day in honour of the recently deceased rapper.

Yesterday (September 17), Rich Homie Quan was laid to rest at his funeral, which was live-streamed and viewed by over 50,000 fans. Following the funeral, the Atlanta City Council announced that the day would be mark the first-ever Rich Homie Quan Memorial Day.

Council member Michael Julian Bond said: “We have a proclamation, which is the honour that the city can present to any man, woman, place or thing… At just 23-years-old, Rich Homie Quan took the music industry by storm by recording the 2008 smash ‘Stay Down’. Whereas Rich Homie Quan’s career advanced Atlanta’s tradition of innovation, he constantly sharpened his signature style marked by killer bars and magnetic melodies that were infused into his soul and music. He picked up multiple gold and platinum records and along the way tallied billions of streams and proudly represented his hometown.”

Rich Homie Quan died at the age of 34 on September 5 in his home. A cause of death has yet to be confirmed, but local authorities have ruled out foul play.

Quan, real name Dequantes Lamar, rose to prominence in 2013 with the single ˜Type Of Way , which reached Number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, while his 2015 single ˜Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh) peaked at Number 26.

Lamar was also known for being a key member of Rich Gang, a project from Cash Money Records, alongside  Young Thug. The group hit Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their 2014 track ˜Lifestyle . He also collaborated with artists including  Travis Scott, Kid Ink,  Fetty Wap  and Omarion.

Following his death, a plethora of musicians paid tribute to the late rapper.  Megan Thee Stallion took to Instagram, sharing a photo of the rapper with the caption: RIP to one of the best. 

Meanwhile, 2 Chainz wrote: Dam lil brother, we just spoke about shooting a video, special prayer for you and your family, and pray for any and everybody that s dealing with something my condolences bru (sic) 

Meanwhile, former  Migos  rapper  Quavo  said: May God be with us, never saw this being apart of our journey. 

BET also paid tribute on its X/Twitter account, writing: Quan provided us with so many hits during the 2010s. You knew you were in for something special as soon as you heard his voice on the hook. Our hearts go out to his family and friends. Rest in power, Quan. 
