In the heart of Westbank, British Columbia, the Red Barn Winery at Jagged Rock has undergone a remarkable transformation. Originally an agricultural storage building with a modest private tasting room, this iconic red barn has been reimagined into a vibrant hospitality destination.
The barn's signature red exterior serves as a beacon among the vineyards, while maintaining a respectful presence through its unassuming form. Large expanses of glass create an immersive connection with the picturesque surroundings. A winding approach through the vineyards heightens anticipation before revealing the entrance.
The redesign, led by Olson Kundig's Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, and Design Principal, enhanced the building's functionality with new features including a staircase, elevator, and mechanical upgrades, while preserving its agricultural heritage.
A double-height production facility occupies one side of the main level, featuring bold purple storage tanks and concrete "egg" fermenters. Generous windows and garage doors flood the space with natural light and vineyard views. Opposite, a public visitor center invites guests to observe the winemaking process. Above, a glass-walled tasting room—the "jewel box"—provides an elegant event space, complemented by a relaxed hospitality area with flexible seating and panoramic views.
The interior combines warm wood floors and wall panels with neutral plaster finishes and white surfaces. Strategic extensions of the exterior's red steel cladding add vibrant accents throughout the hospitality spaces. Outside, a pergola and water feature define gathering areas, while rows of grapevines stretch toward the building, emphasizing the connection between architecture and land.
The Red Barn Winery exemplifies thoughtful design where every element contributes to the narrative of winemaking, creating a space where tradition meets innovation in the journey from vine to glass.
