Cross-industry collaborations between musicians and designers have become a fixture in fashion, but Travis Scott and Rick Owens have broken new ground on a bespoke backstage furniture concept. The end result is a highly functional and modular structure – an extension of the rapper’s world-building for his Utopia album. “I envisioned a space that feels like an extension of my brain,” Scott noted in conversation with Architectural Digest. “Something comfortable and all-encompassing. I like to record, watch movies, chill, have conversations. I wanted it to be all in one.”

Dubbed the “Tech Glade,” the lounge-studio hybrid is made of rearrangeable seating units upholstered in black French wool army blankets. Together the pieces, constructed from Batipan plywood, form a dimly lit canopy over seat cushions at the base of each. French producer Damien Quintard, who's worked with Scott and artists like Justin Bieber and Sade, was brought in to design a studio area neatly integrated into the structure so that Scott could work on the road. Each lounge component can be easily deconstructed and reconfigured as the tour makes stops in new cities.

Michèle Lamy, the long-time creative partner of Owens, designed the original “Glade,” — an upholstered furniture piece that Lamy told Architectural Digest calls to mind “grassy meadows under [a] canopy of delicious trees” — in 2019. The reimagination of the upholstered furniture piece came organically as a continuation of the work that began on Scott’s 2024 SNL performance, which featured Owens’s brutalist-style Pompidou bed in black, as well as Rick Owens clothing worn by the rapper.

The “Tech Glade” will remain on tour with Scott until the end of October, after which it will be displayed at a forthcoming Rick Owens Furniture exhibition at Salon 94 in New York City. The 2025 exhibition will also include new Rick Owens Furniture pieces, existing Owens pieces in new materials, and audio-visual work by the designer. Details about the show are available at Salon 94.
