Tagi, an independent hair salon tucked away in the city of Fukui, has officially opened its doors to in late spring. Taking on hyper-modern and Brutalist-inspired aesthetics through and through, the interior design of Tagi was envisioned by SIDES CORE, a Japanese architecture firm founded by a couple, Sohei and Sumiko Arao.

The clients, who previously worked at different salons, have decided to open their own business together in a tranquil neighborhood in Fukui. In following the couple’s desire to create a cozy yet open space, SIDES CORE also extended the shop’s layout from the salon’s name, Tagi — which means, a place promotes diverse interactions.

Spanning 73.89 square meters of space, the washing, cutting and display areas are divided by low cement partitions. The cemented look permeates the space, from floors, walls to ceilings, creating a consistent industrial aesthetic all without feeling claustrophobic. Partitions come in varying heights, where it’s offset by an array of contemporary decors and functional elements. Mirrors, fixtures, curtains to lighting are suspended from seven parallel hanger wires, allowing a myriad ways for the owners to easily change up the salon’s layout as they see fit.

Take a look around Tagi in the gallery above.
