BMW Group has successfully tested the Figure 02 humanoid robot, developed by California-based robotics company Figure, in a real production environment at its Spartanburg plant. This trial marks BMW's first exploration into the use of humanoid robots in automotive production, with the robot demonstrating its ability to perform complex tasks that are typically challenging for human workers.

Over several weeks, Figure 02 was tasked with inserting sheet metal parts into specific fixtures, a critical step in chassis assembly that requires a high level of dexterity. The robot’s successful performance highlights its potential to handle ergonomically challenging tasks and improve workplace safety and efficiency.

Milan Nedeljković, BMW AG’s Board Member for Production, emphasized the significance of this trial, stating, "The developments in robotics are promising. We are now determining possible applications for humanoid robots in production and intend to accompany this technology from development to industrialization."

Figure 02, the latest generation of humanoid robots, is touted as the most advanced of its kind. It features enhanced processing power, superior sensors and highly dexterous hands, making it capable of autonomously executing tasks with human-like precision. Brett Adcock, CEO of Figure, noted that the robot’s capabilities are particularly suited for tasks that are physically demanding or repetitive, which can improve safety and ergonomics in production settings.

Although no permanent deployment timeline has been set, BMW and Figure will continue their collaboration to refine the robot's capabilities and explore further applications in production. This initiative is part of BMW's broader iFACTORY vision, which focuses on integrating new technologies to enhance efficiency, digitalization and sustainability in manufacturing.
