Following the story behind its Mad Max-esque 928 noise test vehicle, Porsche has shared another 928 highlight — a community-inspired "Surfari."

Notably, the Porsche 928 Surfari represents a creative blend of automotive engineering and surfing culture, a creation born from the passion of a Polish surfing community. This unique project was conceived by Tadeusz Elwart, manager of the Chałupy 6 campsite on Poland’s Hel Peninsula and organizer of the Hel Riders festival.

The idea took root years ago, merging Elwart's love for Porsche with his coastal lifestyle. Aided by his father, who introduced him to the automotive brand, Elwart envisioned a vehicle that could navigate off-road terrains while serving as the perfect beach companion.

Transforming a classic Porsche 928 into a versatile surf vehicle was no small feat. The team, led by engineer and rally driver Tomasz Staniszewski, faced significant challenges. The powerful V8 engine of the 928 was a strong starting point but modifications were needed to the gearbox, differential and suspension to meet the unique demands of a surf car. Staniszewski’s experience, particularly his success in the Classic Dakar Rally with a self-built Porsche 924, was instrumental in overcoming these obstacles.

The design of the 928 Surfari was entrusted to Lange & Lange, twin brothers and longtime members of the Chałupy 6 community. Their expertise ensured the vehicle not only performed well but also looked the part. Debuting at the Hel Riders festival, the 928 Surfari embarked on a road trip to Sylt, Germany and the island of Rømø, Denmark, showcasing its capabilities at the Petro-Surf air-cooled Porsche festival.

As the 928 Surfari continues its adventures, it stands as a testament to the innovative spirit and dedication of its creators, with Porsche stating that it's just waiting for its "next wave."
