After revealing a pattern-packed Fall/Winter 2023 collection in October, New York-based design label Randy's Garments has returned with a special release of workwear staples made with selvedge denim.
Designer Brandon Portelli has a reliable design process: "As always, fabric comes first," he says. Here, the fashioner sourced 13.75-ounce selvedge denim from the premier Japanese mill Niphon Mepu to create utilitarian overshirts and trousers. Because the bolt for the textile is only 32 inches wide, Portelli needs several yards of the material to create just one unit of each garment. After assembling his pieces, the designer washes, dries, tumbles and hand-presses them to bring out the fabric's strong dust-red hue.
"I choose not to cut the redline selvedge," he explains. "Instead, each pair is wrapped & bow-tied in their "precious" selvedge. Reminding you why you pay the big bucks, which should only be for you to know."

The top design is Portelli's take on the classic five-button front shirt, with an oversized composition, large front patch pockets, two-piece sleeves and three-needle flat-felled seams all over. The jeans, meanwhile, feature seven pockets, including two multi-tool pouches, traditional rear yolk, a reinforced waistband with nickel closure and similar flat-felled and pressed seams.
