A man released under the government’s early release scheme from prisons has already been arrested on suspicion of rape just moments after he was freed.

It happened outside Wandsworth Prison yesterday after many prisoners were released early and looked visibly jubilant.

The 28-year-old man was equally surprised but then this soon turned shock when he realised police were waiting for him, according to MailOnline.

They cuffed him up and led him away on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and a racially aggravated public order offence but it is unclear when all this took place.

It has raised the question as to how and why this prisoner was released from the prison in south west London in the first place.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: ‘A 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and a racially/religiously aggravated public order offence.

‘He was taken to a south London police station before being bailed pending further enquiries in relation to the allegation of rape.

‘No further action will be taken in connection with the other allegations.’

This news comes after prisoners were released early yesterday with some doing rock ‘n roll hand signs with a smile and others hiding their faces in hoodies, around 1,750 prisoners in England and Wales were released yesterday.

Most will have served less than half their sentences, raising concerns over reoffending.

A group of inmates even popped champagne corks when they walked free from a jail in Nottingham.

One now-former inmate of HMP Wandsworth told LBC that it ‘feels good’ to be free and headed straight to McDonald’s.

Governors are unlocking the cell doors on top of the roughly 1,000 prisoners normally freed each week to cut overcrowding.

Outside HMP Bristol, prisoners were milling about while holding belongings in Horfield where an estimated 19 were freed yesterday.
