A woman has been charged with murder over the death of an ‘extremely popular’ six-year-old boy at a house in Swansea.

Karolina Zurawska, 41, from Gendros in the southern Welsh city, will appear at the local magistrates court tomorrow in connection with the death of Alexander Zurawski.

She has also been charged with attempted murder in connection with an incident involving a 67-year-old man on Thursday.

Alexander was found dead in a house on Cwm Du Close later that same day.

In a statement, the boy’s family described him as a ‘very kind’ boy who ‘loved playing with his little sister and playing with his dog Daisy’.

They added: ‘Alexander was always well behaved and never naughty. He was very clever and very mature for his age. He had great understanding of facts.

‘Alexander was always helpful. Always eager to assist with cooking and cleaning.

‘Alexander spoke both English and Polish and would often correct his parents with their English if they got words wrong.

‘He was amazing.’

Bethan Peterson, headteacher of Whitestone Primary School, said: ‘We’re devastated to learn of the tragic death of Alexander.

‘Alexander was a delightful, determined little boy whose tenacity and positive demeanour ensured his success in all he undertook.

‘He was an extremely loved and popular boy amongst his peers, staff and with all who knew him. He will be sadly missed.’

Neighbours described their shock at the scale of police activity in the area and their horror at what was found in the house.

Tony Creen, 62, has never seen anything like it in the more than 20 years he has lived in the area.

He said: ‘We were sitting there last night and heard a lot of police sirens going off and helicopter going on.

‘We saw people looking out down that end so we came out, my wife and I. We got down there and could see everything going on – tons of police cars and flashing lights.

‘Evidence people were literally running down there and a helicopter landing in a park over the road.’

Describing the news as ‘shocking’, he added: ‘You hear these things on the news but you don’t think it’s going to happen where you live.’

Police Chief Superintendent Chris Truscott said: ‘A police presence will be retained in the local area over the coming days in order to provide advice and reassurance.

“Our thoughts are with Alexander’s family and friends at this difficult time.
