Girl, 13, admits unlawful violence during riot outside migrant hotel

A 13-year-old girl has become the latest youngster to be convicted for her part in the widespread riots sparked by the Southport stabbings.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted threatening unlawful violence after ‘punching and kicking’ the entrance to a hotel housing asylum seekers in Aldershot on July 31. She sat with her parents throughout the short hearing at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court today. She was bailed ahead of sentence at the same court on September 30.

At least 50 under-18s have now been charged, including a 12-year-old boy who admitted violent disorder relating to his involvement in two riots in Rotherham. District Judge Joanne Hirst said the boy had been ‘more involved in the violence and disorder than any other defendant I’ve seen’. As of Monday, 975 arrests had been made and 546 charges had been brought, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) said.

Coverage ends for the day

A 13-year-old girl pleaded guilty to using or threatening unlawful violence following a far-right riot outside a hotel in Aldershot.

Meanwhile a man who looted cosmetics chain Lush during riots in Hull pleaded guilty to violent disorder, burglary and racially aggravated criminal damage.

A judge hit out at an accused rioter who missed his court appearance after flying out to Dubai on holiday.

A 19-year-old man was jailed for three years after he admitted throwing bricks and lighted arrows at police protecting a hotel housing asylum seekers.

Nevey Smith, 21, admitted violent disorder during a disturbance outside the hotel in Newton Heath, Manchester, on July 31 and could be seen crying in court.

Manchester Magistrates Court heard Smith was taking her child to her grandmother’s when she saw a family member outside the hotel.

Smith threw a liquid from a bottle towards the police officers after ‘losing her temper’.

District Judge Joanne Hirst granted her bail and said: ‘I am prepared to give you one opportunity. You put your own child at risk.’

‘We can’t control him’ – Grandma of 12-year-old rioter reveals

The grandma of a 12-year-old rioter who admitted joining two mob rampages through Manchester revealed the family can no longer control him.

Talking to MailOnline, she said the boy used to live with her but then left after he clashed with her disabled son and wrecked her home.

She said he went missing for a week before getting involved in the rioting.

The grandma also revealed that the boy’s dad is in jail.

She said: ‘I work with young people and if I can help out, I will do. But I just can’t help him anymore. I’ve done my nanna bit.

‘I think he likes the excitement. He’s seen a lot of violence in his life, sadly. His dad is serving a long prison sentence. His mother can’t control him.

‘It’s incredibly sad. He’s a lovely little boy when on his own. You’d think he’d actually listen to what you try to tell him but it goes in one ear and out the other.’

More than 1,000 in handcuffs following riots

The National Police Chiefs’ Council says that police officers up and down Britain have arrested more than 1,000 people.

He also wrote the same ‘needs to happen’ to a hotel in his hometown.

England pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court to using threatening, abusive or insulting words to stir up racial hatred.

His posts also included offensive references to the Grenfell Tower disaster and Islam.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Hall said: ‘England’s remarks were not a dark attempt at humour, nor were they a one-off aberration.

‘At a time when many people in our communities were experiencing fear and anxiety, he directly challenged other members of the public to set fire to a building with people inside.’

Barbara Barker, 52, pleaded not guilty to violent disorder at Manchester Magistrates’ Court.

Lush looter’s sentencing delayed amid claims he offered probation officer an autograph ‘because he’s famous’

Sentencing for a man who looted cosmetics chain Lush during riots in Hull has been adjourned after claims he asked a prison probation officer ‘if he wanted his autograph’.

John Honey helped attack a car with three Romanian men in, targeted a garage leaving nine vehicles damaged and pushed bins at police lines during the disorder on August 3.

The 25-year-old ‘played a prominent role’ in the 12 hours of violence and unrest that gripped the city, prosecutors said.

Honey pleaded guilty to violent disorder and three charges of burglary at Lush, the O2 store and Shoezone.

He also admitted racially aggravated criminal damage of a BMW, and to damaging nine other cars during an attack on a garage.

Judge John Thackray KC, the Recorder of Hull, said he had received a letter from a member of staff at HMP Hull who claimed they were conducting an assessment with Honey and that he had asked ‘if I wanted his autograph as he is famous and is all over social media’.

They said he was an ‘over-confident individual’ who ‘presented with no remorse’.

The court heard Honey disputed the probation officer’s claims and wanted to be sentenced on the basis that he was ‘genuinely remorseful’.

The case was adjourned until Friday for further statements to be taken.

The city’s magistrates’ court heard yesterday how Cann was ‘seen to be on a bike’ in police footage taken on Royal Parade.

Claire Tresidder, prosecuting, said the ‘bike’ was actually a form of mobility scooter as Cann has a prosthetic lower right leg which is emblazoned with a St George’s Cross pattern.

Cann, who appeared in the dock flanked by two security officers replied ‘Oh yeah, I’m guilty’ before putting his hands up in the air when asked to offer a plea to the charge of violent disorder.

Ms Tresidder said Cann was seen to pick up items from the floor and throw them in the direction of the counter-protestors.

Other police footage showed Cann throwing a firework which landed on the counter-protestors’ side and run from where it landed.

The court was told that Cann had previous convictions, the most recent being possession of an offensive weapon in 2019.

District Judge Stuart Smith said Cann had accepted his role in the ‘very significant’ disorder, adding ‘violent thuggery is not going to be tolerated’.

Cann was remanded into custody for a sentencing hearing at Plymouth Crown Court today where Judge Robert Linford jailed him for three years.

The Tory leadership hopeful said people make different choices when it comes to engaging with social media when asked if politicians should rethink using X.

‘Frankly I found those comments delusional and simply false. The question as to how we operate on social media is a difficult one,’ he said.

Giving the example of TikTok, he said: ‘I refuse to be on TikTok because the algorithm is set by a foreign dictatorship. Others make different choices.’

Masked man who waved stick at anti-racism protesters jailed

A 30-year-old man has been jailed for four-and-a-half months at Sheffield Crown Court after he was caught on CCTV brandishing a stick at anti-racist demonstrators.

Footage shown to a judge showed masked Curtis Coulson, 30, waving a stick in front of one woman who appeared to be filming him outside Sheffield City Hall, on Sunday August 4, before others from the demonstration advanced towards him.

Coulson is already subject to a football banning order after he was convicted of throwing missiles at a match, and he told police he found the mask in his pocket after last wearing his jacket at a football match in Serbia.

The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, told the defendant: ‘This form of public disorder is outrageous.’

A 19-year-old man has been jailed for three years at Sheffield Crown Court after he admitted throwing bricks and lighted arrows at police protecting a hotel housing asylum seekers.

Father-of-one Drew Jarvis was filmed lighting an arrow with a lighter and throwing it at officers during the rioting outside the Holiday Inn Express in Manvers, Rotherham, on Sunday August 4, a judge heard.

Footage was shown in court, filmed from inside the hotel, of Jarvis throwing wooden planks at the building, wearing a hoodie and a mask.

When the Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, asked ‘what possessed him to turn up’, Dale Harris, defending, said: ‘Probably stupidity.’

The court heard how Jarvis told police after his arrest that he went to the hotel because it was ‘just another opportunity to vote, to sort out the hotel, to sort out the people staying within it’.

Unemployed Jarvis, of no fixed abode, but originally from Barnsley, admitted violent disorder last week.

Following the conviction of the 13-year-old girl at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court, Thomas Power, a senior crown prosecutor with CPS Wessex, said: ‘This alarming incident will have caused genuine fear amongst people who were being targeted by these thugs – and it is particularly distressing to learn that such a young girl participated in this violent disorder.

‘Large-scale public unrest is never acceptable and the Crown Prosecution Service will not hesitate to respond swiftly and robustly to uphold law and order.

‘We will continue working with our partners in policing and the wider criminal justice system to make sure those who bring violence and panic to our communities face the consequences of their actions.’

Arrest warrant for ‘rioter’ who jetted off to Dubai

A judge has hit out at an accused rioter who missed his court appearance after flying out to Dubai on holiday.

Perrie Fisher, 28, was due to appear in court after being charged with violent disorder on Friday.

However, he jetted off to the Middle East on Sunday for seven nights on a ‘pre-booked’ holiday, Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court heard today.

District Judge Tim Pattinson issued a warrant without bail upon his return to the UK.

Fisher is said to have been involved in violent disorder that broke out during a protest at a hotel housing asylum seekers in Aldershot on July 31.

The judge said: ‘To say these are serious matters is an understatement. They have attracted national attention at the very highest level. My view is it’s not acceptable for [Fisher] to fail to attend court.’

He therefore issued a warrant without bail for when Fisher lands on UK tarmac on Sunday.
