Two men have been murdered in the same east London borough within the space of 30 hours.

The second victim, a man in his early 30s, was shot near Bethnal Green tube station at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, where he died a short while later.

Firearms officers and an air ambulance were among the emergency services sent to the scene. The man has not been named but detectives believe they know who he is and his family have been told.

Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Vicky Tunstall said: ‘Sadly, this is the second murder in Tower Hamlets in a 30-hour period.’

It came after a 23-year-old man was stabbed to death around four miles away on New Union Close.

While formal identification awaits, he has been named as Abdul Jalloh, who lived in the area.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Ms Tunstall said: ‘Tragically, another young man has lost his life to violence and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.

‘Tackling violent crime remains our absolute focus, but we need to work together with communities to achieve this.’

She added: ‘I know this is extremely concerning but I would like to reassure the community that there will be an increased police presence on the borough, and I would urge anyone who has any concerns or information about this heinous crime to approach them.’

Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley said: ‘I would ask that people submit any phone, drone or dashcam footage of anything in the area at the relevant time.

‘A crime scene will remain in place for some time and we thank the local community for their patience whilst we progress this.’
