Dave Brailsford 'held 90-minute Rashford meeting' after worrying training ground moment

Marcus Rashford has seemingly been disillusioned with Manchester United for almost a year after reports the star held a 90-minute meeting with Sir Dave Brailsford after INEOS arrived at the club. In February last year, Sir Jim Ratcliffe finally completed his minority stake purchase in the club, just days after the Red Devils won away at Newport in the FA Cup.

But in the build-up to that game, Rashford is said to have fallen out with one of former manager Erik ten Hag's assistants, Steve McClaren.

The revelations come as the forward appears close to the exit door at Old Trafford, having not played a minute for the club since the Europa League win at Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

According to The Athletic, McClaren was overseeing a small-sided tournament among United’s squad at Carrington as preparation for the trip to Rodney Parade. The ex-England forward's team were said to have made the final, prompting McClaren to quip that the competition was now 'Rashford's to lose'.

That comment seemingly upset the 27-year-old, who was unhappy at extra pressure and expectation being placed on him. The report states that McLaren noted the player's apparent vulnerability, and spoke to both Ten Hag and Brailsford on the matter.

Rashford wasn't involved in the FA Cup tie, which United duly won 4-2 en route to winning the trophy. But the Monday after game, Brailsford was said to have spoken to United’s squad about the INEOS vision of raising standards at the club on and off the field.

While the talk was scheduled and not thought to have been directly aimed at Rashford, the club academy product was then said to have requested a one-one-one meeting with the former cycling chief. The pair then reportedly spoke privately for around 90 minutes.

But 12 months on and the situation between Rashford and the club appears to have further deteriorated. The player was dropped from the squad for the win over Manchester City last month, and two days later gave an interview to esteemed journalist Henry Winter where he outlined his desire to leave.

"For me, personally, I think I'm ready for a new challenge and the next steps," he told Winter. "When I leave it's going to be no hard feelings. If I know that a situation is already bad I'm not going to make it worse."

Despite his intentions, Rashford has rejected the chance of a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia this month, favouring instead the prospect of staying in Europe to aid his international ambitions. For his part, Amorim has insisted he considers the player still available for selection.

But the Portuguese boss has revealed Rashford is unlikely to be involved at Liverpool on Sunday after missing training with illness. "At the moment, he's ill," he said. "He's not training so we'll see in the future but he's like a normal player, then I make a selection so it's the same."
