Doctor Who creator teases potential new spin-off after Christmas special

Doctor Who: The Doctor helps a hotel receptionist

Doctor Who fans were glued to the edge of their seats on Christmas Day when the annual festive offering aired on BBC One. The Christmas episode, titled Joy to the World, saw the Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa) time travel to the Time Hotel in 4202.

Guests at this hotel in the future were able to holiday anywhere in time, including historical moments such as London during the Blitz or the assassination of JFK. The Doctor was joined by a character named Joy, who was played by none other than Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan.

As they watched the episode, fans were quick to point many different Easter eggs including Mr Benn's Clothes Shop which was a nod to the BBC Children's show that aired in the 70s.

The titular character would visit a costume shop, where he would be seen entering a magic door and he would be able to experience a brand new world related to the chosen costume.

After the success of the Christmas special, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies and writer Steven Moffatt have teased the possibility of delving back into this world for a new spin-off.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Russell suggested: "A spin-off! You could do a spin-off for that, Steven?"

Steven responded: "That's a show, isn't it? I mean, that's Mr Benn for a new generation. You could absolutely bring back the Time Hotel. I can't imagine the Doctor being able to resist going there!"

Half way through the episode, fans were left devastated after the death of a character, which they clearly didn't see coming.

They mourned the untimely loss of Joel Fry as Trev Simpkins, a staff member at the Time Hotel, who helped the Doctor on his adventure.
