The latest episode of The Masked Singer UK was brought to a sudden halt by host Joel Dommett, leading to an uproar from the studio audience.

The eccentric ITV guessing game kicked off its sixth series on Saturday (January 4) night, introducing a fresh batch of disguised celebrities vying for the title.

Characters Teeth, Snail, Tattoo, Kingfisher, Spaghetti Bolognese and Dressed Crab took to the stage, performing for celebrity sleuths Mo Gilligan, Davina McCall, newcomer Maya Jama and Jonathan Ross, along with special guest Mo Farrah.

Following the performances, the studio audience cast their votes for who they wanted to advance in the competition. Spag Bol and Teeth found themselves at the bottom, receiving the fewest votes.

The panel chose to save Teeth, leaving Spag Bol to be the first celebrity to unmask and reveal their identity. Before the big reveal, Mo, Davina, Jonathan, Mo Farrah and Maya all speculated about the celebrity behind the costume, reports the Mirror.

Names like Ruby Wax, Julia Bradbury, Judy Murray, Emma Raducanu, Anita Rani were thrown into the mix, heightening the anticipation.

Joel chimed in: "I suppose there's only one way to find out" initiating the customary "take it off" chant.

However, in a shocking turn of events, he dashed onto the stage to halt the cheers just as Spag Bol was about to remove their mask.

He revealed: "Wait, wait wait. wait a second. Hold up, hold up. There's only one way to find out who's behind the mask, and apparently, it's to come back tomorrow night."

The unexpected twist from Joel left the panel of judges agape, while boos from the studio audience echoed in the background.

As the show neared its end, Joel quipped: "I'll be honest, I quite like being the villain" before teasing: "Make sure you join us tomorrow night for the second part of our mega-masked weekend when we'll have six more incredible performances and not one but two unmaskings, including this one right here. Give it up for Spag Bol everybody. We'll see you again tomorrow, goodbye".

This shocking cliffhanger has sparked outrage among viewers, with social media users expressing their frustration. One viewer vented: "That's ridiculous that we have to wait till tomorrow to see who it is."

Another complained: "This show is not good enough to warrant a 24 hour cliffhanger."

A third grumbled: "So we've wasted our time watching this?"

The Masked Singer UK continues Sunday at 6.30pm on ITV. Fans will see Spag Bol unmasked and Bush, Pufferfish, Pegasus, Wolf, Toad in the Hole, and Bear will debut their performances.
