Michael Portillo's Andalucia has been slapped with a trigger warning for the under-16s - as it contains references to alcohol. according to reports.

Jerez has a reputation as the "sherry capital of the world", due to the distinctive taste of the grapes cultivated for wine production there - but Channel 5 wasn't keen for kids to see it.

Scenes from the episode, which are now available via the My5 streaming service, feature Conservative MP turned TV star Portillo indulging in a 15-minute tasting session. He recommends the region's "enormous variety of wine" and suggests that it tastes great with almost all foods.

At one point, Portillo, who is half-Spanish through his paternal DNA, shares: "My friends in Andalucia put a couple of bottles of pale sherry in an ice bucket on the lunch table and experiment to see what foods it can be paired with."

He continued: "In my experience, the answer is most.” The decision to place a warning on the show has raised eyebrows, with Tory MP Sir John Hayes publicly rallying against it.

He stated: "Most people find these types of trigger warnings very bizarre. It’s less about the programs and more about these people who feel we have to protect everyone from any kind of fear or stimulus.

"If these warnings can go on family-friendly shows, it makes you wonder where this woke Puritan culture ends.”

According to The Sun, Channel 5 sources have suggested that the trigger alert is a generic warning applied to a large number of shows it hosts on the streaming platform.

The BBC also recently shared a warning about Michael Palin’s Around The World In 80 Days documentary, as it featured a snake being sliced up in China.

Viewers were told in advance that they would be accessing distressing content.

However, it has been questioned why Portillo discussing wine has also been deemed to require a warning.

The episode (the fifth in series one) saw him head to the annual sherry grape harvesting festival, as well as the finale of the annual Tall Ships race.

Elsewhere in the area, he also checked out Cadiz, known as Europe's oldest and longest inhabited city.
