ITV This Morning star issues urgent plea to viewers for Christmas
Dr Scott Miller, the resident vet on ITV's This Morning has implored people not to get a dog for Christmas, despite the fact that rescues are overflowing.
Urging those who are in the market for a furry friend to wait, he exclusively told Express.co.uk it is not a good time to bring a dog into your family as you can't focus on it. "It really isn't a great time because of all of the variables that you're bringing into your family home for Christmas anyway," he explained.
"To try to then bring a dog in as well, I think it's just a bit much. And also it just puts a too high of an expectation on them [the dog] , because your focus is on everywhere but dog.
"And then there's all the toxic foods that you bring in, there's all the plants, there's the Christmas tree and then the decorations and the lights and all these things which are potential hazards and dangers.
"It can just mean that it really is the wrong time for bringing animals in," he said.

This Morning's resident vet Dr Scott Miller has issued a stern warning about getting a pet for Xmas (Image: Peamutt)"It's such a shame because I have my YouTube channel, Rescue Vet, and we've been doing something called 12 Rescues Of Christmas, where we're going and visiting rescue centers and rescue animals up and down the country. And there's a real need at the moment [for people to take in animals]."
Scott practices what he preaches and proudly showed off his own adorable rescue dog Mango during the chat. "There's a huge increase in people calling to give up their animals, and there's really not many people then taking them on. Rescue centers are at breaking points. It's a really dire situation within the rescue community.
"We absolutely say to people, please do consider rescue because there are some dogs just like Mango. I never would have thought a gorgeous dog like him would find his way to rescue. But that happens.
"It's not simply just neglect - some people just simply are struggling... there's lots of different reasons why they find a way to rescue but I certainly would say around Christmas time, I think there's just far too many things going on to be able to focus on a new animal, and it doesn't give them a fair start.
"But I do absolutely take my hat off to all the people up and down the country who either volunteer or work at rescue centers and are giving up their families to look after them. They genuinely they are heroes," he enthused.

Scott was speaking in his capacity as head judge for Peamutt Butter's search for a new star to appear on their jars. The Manchester-based dog treat company has issued a call out for dog owners to submit their canine companions for the role saying they should have a love of peanut treats, fun personality.
While Scott is unable to submit Mango to the contest he did give an insight into what he is looking for from potential winners.
"I love when you can sort of read a dog's personality through their their appearance and so I'd be quite keen to have a dog that looks bit playful, maybe a little bit cheeky, but naughty.
"A dog that just sort of has a bit of charisma behind the eyes. So, you know, just, just a dog that looks like they're enjoying life and they're much loved."
British dog owners have until January 12 to enter their pet pooch in the the competition via the website or Instagram page, by completing the form and uploading a picture of their dog.
