David Beckham has praised Manchester United players who show a genuine desire to don the club's jersey, in what seems to be a veiled swipe at two players who were dropped from the squad on Sunday.

Ruben Amorim's side pulled off a remarkable feat over the weekend, securing a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The shock began even before kick-off when Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were left out of the Red Devils' lineup by Amorim.

The Portuguese manager cited 'training performance, game performances and engagement with team-mates' as possible factors for their exclusion, while also clarifying post-match that the decision was not due to disciplinary issues.

Nonetheless, Beckham appeared to take a subtle jab at both Rashford and Garnacho. On Instagram, alongside an image of Amad Diallo celebrating his decisive goal, Beckham posted: "And the rebuild begins. Big win. Big win with players who wanna wear this jersey," accompanied by a red heart emoji.

Beckham wasn't alone in commenting on the absence of Rashford and Garnacho; Gary Neville also commended Amorim for his tough stance on maintaining high standards at Old Trafford.

While on Sky Sports, Neville remarked: "I don't know about their long-term future but what's really clear is he's mentioned engaging with team-mates. He's mentioned standards.

So, he's given us clues as to what's happened over the last few days that they've been moping. Not doing their bit around the training ground, engaging with their teammates properly, standards in training.

"And he's gone 'no, I'm not having it, I'm not accepting it.' And good on him because for far too long we've seen players mope around that pitch and still continue to get a game. 'Oh he's on the bench' No. It's got to be non-negotiable. If you don't give your all in your job, you're gone."

He also referenced Roy Keane's view on Rashford's situation at United: "A move for Marcus [Rashford] would suit the player – a new challenge for him.

"He's been there a long time. When you're at a big club and your attitude is not right – and it hasn't been great recently – sometimes it's good to part ways."

It appears that the Red Devils could be willing to offload Rashford come January, finally lifting his hefty £325k per week pay cheque from their wage bill.
