Virgin River's Jack Sheridan faces backlash for 'off-putting' behaviour in season one

Virgin River season 6 official trailer

Virgin River enthusiasts have been taking aim at Jack Sheridan (played by Martin Henderson) for his actions prior to his official romance with Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) in the show's first season.

Initially, Jack was entangled in a casual affair with Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), who considered their fling to be more serious.

Fast forward to season five, and while Charmaine has progressed rapidly with her new beau Todd Masry (Patrick Sabongui), she is yet to deliver her twins.

With the sixth season set to drop on Netflix just in time for the festive period, fans have been reflecting on the series' journey, examining the peaks and troughs of the narrative.

Some viewers may find themselves taken aback when revisiting Jack's character in the inaugural season, noting the significant emotional development he has undergone throughout the show, reports the Mirror.

A fan expressed their thoughts on Reddit: "I'm re-watching Virgin River and Jack's emotional immaturity is really off-putting.

"In my home country there is a term for that kind of behaviour, 'a slipper', like the shoe. Instead of taking any action or responsibility in a relationship they just.. exist, and even the simplest form of communication is beyond them.

"They just seem completely unable to take any kind of charge within that relationship."

Jack's initial portrayal in Virgin River showed him as quite reserved, especially towards Mel and Charmaine, possibly using this as a coping mechanism to protect them from the psychological scars he bore from his military service.

Jack and Mel from Virgin River have come a long way, with both characters now more emotionally open to each other than ever before.

However, some of the show's most ardent fans still find it hard to overlook Jack's previous transgressions.

The post continued: "The way he treats [Charmaine] after meeting Mel is not nice.

"I remember when watching the show for the first time I wondered about how Jack never seemed into Charmaine at all, even when they were intimate he just seemed.. bitter? And slightly repulsed."

In the comments section, viewers echoed these sentiments, with one person stating: "When Charmaine finally went off on him, I was HERE for it."

Another chimed in: "He basically got off scot-free for five seasons before they addressed his treatment of her."

A further comment read: "Here we call that being an Fboy.. Jack totally Fboy'd Charmaine, he played her.

"He attempts to backtrack and claim he told her there was basically no future but his actions didn't match his words - he strung her along using her until something better came along. Men like this are not to be respected."

Despite past mistakes, many fans believe Jack has sufficiently redeemed himself, but the question remains whether he will maintain this positive trajectory in season six.

Virgin River season 6 premieres Thursday, December 19 on Netflix.
