Yellowstone fans 'work out' how show will end after Kevin Costner exit storyline unveiled

Yellowstone official teaser trailer for new season on Paramount+

*Warning - This article contains spoilers for season 5b of Yellowstone.*

Yellowstone viewers have been sharing their best guesses for how they think the Paramount Network show will end following Kevin Costner’s early departure from the project.

Fans of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-western drama, which returned this month, have put forward some compelling theories for how the story might be wrapped up for good after family patriarch John Dutton (Costner) was killed off in the first episode of season 5b.

In the new episode of Yellowstone season 5, it is revealed that John’s death was only staged to look like a suicide.

In fact, it seems he was actually killed by a hitman hired by Jamie’s (Wes Bentley) girlfriend Sarah (Dawn Olivieri).

This raises questions about which of John’s children - if any - will inherit the Dutton land and what will happen to it.

The remaining Dutton siblings include Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly).

Beth is married to her father’s longtime right-hand man Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), while Kayce is married to Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille), who is of Native American descent and from the nearby Broken Rock Reservation.

Taking to Reddit, one fan with the handle @Bee_Brittany shared an interesting theory on how they believe Yellowstone will conclude.

They wrote: “Predictions on how it will end.. Since John is out of the show, my husband and I have been trying to guess how the series will end. Not saying it’ll end with season 5 but as a whole.

“My prediction is the ranch will go to Kayce, and he will end up giving it some if not all back to the Native Americans.

“That’s what Monica has always been pushing for and he lived on the reservation with them for years. Idk, just a thought. What does everyone else think??” they added, opening up the discussion. (sic)

While another fan speculated over whether John is really dead, writing: “If John is really dead: Jamie will take down the syndicate behind John’s murder and redeem himself.

“Beth will get pregnant by miracle. If John is not dead: he will give the ranch to the natives and retire in a small hut.” (sic)

Another suggested: “Tate inherits the ranch after Kacey is dead. He then becomes the new chief of the reservation and runs both.”

While one more disagreed with the original poster, commenting: “It will likely end that way but it also seems too predictable. Hoping there is more to the end than that. Or that idea with a major twist.”

One more fan with the username @TheFrederalGovt posted their own theory to Reddit, arguing that it’s “pretty obvious what’s going to happen at the end”.

They wrote: “I like Yellowstone but isn’t it pretty clear that Beth will live and Jamie will die? There is never any nuance with this show - it props up Beth as the hero who always wins every fight she’s in and always has the last laugh, while Jamie as the loser who craves power but is weak and easily manipulated.

“With Beth and Rip seen as the most popular aspect of the show and both of them seen as heroes while Jamie is seen as a weak villain there's absolutely no way that the showrunners would have Jamie come out on top in the end.” (sic)

Yellowstone airs Sunday nights on Paramount Network, with UK audiences able to stream it the following day on Paramount Plus.
