Coronation Street's Calum Lill shares backstage secret behind Joel Deering's death scene
Coronation Street went all out for the dramatic departure of villain Joel Deering.
The soap initiated a thrilling whodunnit last month featuring the malevolent solicitor Joel (Calum Lol). As viewers will remember, he arrived as a seemingly good guy in 2023 and began a relationship with Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown).
However, his 'true' nature was soon exposed. In a shocking turn of events, it was disclosed that he had a past of grooming and abusing young girls, including Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) - whom he tried to murder before she fled and disappeared for months.
Joel's offences were eventually brought to light - and at the end of September, his body was discovered in a local river. However, a pathologist later determined that Joel had died prior to entering the water.
Over the past few weeks, several residents have become suspects, including Dee-Dee, and even Carla Connor (Alison King), reports Plymouth Live.

Tension escalated between Max and Joel as the menacing lawyer began to insult Lauren, leading to a violent confrontation. Defending his girlfriend, Max was met with aggression as Joel attempted to strangle him, only for Lauren to intervene by striking her attacker with a rock, resulting in his death.

Following their decision, Max and Lauren were separately brought into the police station for questioning by Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) after they came forward to shield Lauren.
In an unexpected twist, the soap employed cutting-edge Hollywood technology to craft the gripping episode. Joel's actor, Calum, divulged to Reach and other media outlets about the experience of filming the climactic scene with advanced tech at their disposal.
"It was as if we were filming a movie," he revealed. The actor elaborated: "One of the scenes we spent about 12 hours shooting and we've got all these different cameras and green screens and special effects. It was incredible."
Moreover, Calum and the Corrie ensemble found themselves amidst A-listers during production. He recounted: "Where we filming, it was Peaky Blinders movie, House of Guinness, these big Hollywood films, and then us."

Coronation Street star Calum Lill has opened up about his death scene (Image: Danielle Baguley ITV)This high-tech approach was previously utilized for Kelly Neelan's (Millie Gibson) departure scene in 2022. Reflecting on the process of filming with such sophisticated technology and the volume wall, Calum described: "It was this huge black room, the ceiling was probably 70 feet high."
Describing the enthralling setting, he expressed: "And it's just this massive semi-circle of screens and then your set in the middle. We had this long railway bridge that we built, and that's on a table that turns."
Calum delved further into the intricate workings of the scene, saying: "So instead of the camera moving, the train track moves and the whole background is synched to the camera. So wherever the camera moves, the background moves as if the camera's moving in the real place. It's crazy, but it's really cool."
